Chapter 10

Ten minutes later, I was redressed and packed for my weekend away.

I nervously chewed on my thumbnail as we got closer to Columbia. Every so often Marcus would pull my hand away from my mouth.

“They’re going to be fine with this. I’m almost sure of it,” he offered reassuringly. It might have worked better if he hadn’t said almost. “Trust me, they like you better than Staci and they liked Staci better than Sam. You’re definitely going to be their top pick as far as in-laws go.”

“Who’s Sam?”

“He was my sister’s husband.” His voice turned cold.

“What is the story with your sister? I’ve never seen anything about her in your head. Not that I’ve looked specifically.”

“Natalie and I used to be very close. Just like you and Chase. I protected her and—”

“Drove her crazy by getting in her business?” I interrupted.

He laughed once. “Maybe a little,” he admitted. “You can’t understand what it’s like to be a big brother. We’re men, we know what we want when it comes to girls, but then we don’t want other men looking for those same things from our sister.”

“I guess I can kind of see what you mean. I told Lori Reeler in general assembly to stay away from my brother, because I heard she had crabs.” I giggled.

“That is…not really the same thing at all, Jasmine. And it’s a little gross,” he mocked me.

“Go on with your story,” I said.

“Nat was dating Sam when she graduated from high school. He was twenty. She ended up pregnant and then married Sam. I really did not like Sam for my sister. He was very controlling and a few times I saw marks on her arms.

“When I questioned her, she denied he had touched her, but I just had a feeling. I threatened him. But he just laughed it off and denied hurting her. Natalie got mad at me for interfering in their relationship and stopped speaking to me.

“I didn’t even get to see my niece until she was three.” He smiled when he thought of Maddy. I had seen her picture when we visited his parents. “She’s eight now. She’s cute as a button, but a smart ass just like her mother.” He shook his head endearingly and went on.

“I was right though. Sam was hurting Natalie. He wouldn’t let her visit my mom and dad. She had to come straight home from work. My mom would tell me the stories and I had to tell her to stop.

“It was so frustrating to know she needed my help, but she wouldn’t let me. I guess Natalie ended up in the hospital a couple times, but she kept going back to him. Until one day last year, Sam hit Maddy.” Marcus’s face turned cold as ice.

“He busted her lip. That was it. Natalie didn’t seem to care what happened to herself, but she definitely cared about protecting Maddy.

“She called the cops and while Sam was detained she moved her stuff out and went to a hotel.
